Morton Grove police reported that in the past two weeks, scam artists have defrauded two local victims of large amounts of money.
On April 4, a victim in the 7100 block of Greenwood in Morton Grove told police she received a phone call from her husband’s phone number. The caller told her they worked with the Social Security office, they were working with the Chicago Police Department, her husband was in custody, and she needed to pay for him
to be released. She withdrew $4,500 from her bank and deposited it into a Bitcoin
machine, according to police.
On April 6, a victim in the 7800 block of Luna in Morton Grove told police that someone she met on a chat app convinced her to open a cryto currency account. Over a period of six months, she invested approximately $187,000 into the account. When she went to withdraw the money, the account was locked. She called her CPA, and she was told it was a scam, according to police.
