Schaumburg woman killed in 3-vehicle collision is identified by Lake County coroner

A woman killed Tuesday afternoon in a three-vehicle collision has been identified by the Lake County Coroner.

Karen Flintz, 53, of Schaumburg, was killed after the Hyundai sedan she was driving veered into oncoming traffic “for an unknown reason,” according to a news release from the coroner’s office.

According to authorities, Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to Route 59 and Miller Road in Lake Barrington on a call of a traffic crash with injuries. Deputies arrived and found three vehicles with heavy damage, the release states.

Authorities explained in the release that a preliminary investigation showed the Hyundai sedan, driven by Flintz, was traveling northbound on Route 59 when the driver “veered into the southbound lanes of traffic.”

The Hyundai struck the rear of a semi-trailer driven by a 62-year-old man from Hawthorn Woods. The Hyundai then struck a Lincoln SUV that had been going southbound. The driver of the Lincoln was a 46-year-old man from Cary, the release states.

Flintz was taken from the scene to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Following an autopsy Wednesday, the coroner’s office determined she died of blunt force injuries as a result of the collision. The other drivers sustained minor injuries, according to authorities.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and MCAT, the county’s major crash assistance team.
