Secretary of State’s office says it was hit in nationwide DMV network outage

If you’re planning to head to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office to take a driving test, renew your license or use any of the other driver’s services the office handles, consider calling ahead.

The office has been hit by a network outage, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in a post on X Thursday morning. Departments of Motor Vehicles nationwide were hit by the outage and were down midday Thursday, Giannoulias said in his post.

The outage could be affecting hours of operation and services, like road tests, Giannoulias’ post said. He encouraged customers to call 800-252-8980 before heading to a secretary of state facility.

A spokesman for Giannoulias’ office did not immediately respond to additional Tribune questions midday Thursday.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
