Seven people injured in Griffith fireworks malfunction

Griffith police are investigating a fireworks incident in the 900 Block of North Arbogast Street on Saturday night in which numerous injuries were reported.

Griffith police, fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene at 9:30 p.m. where they found seven victims of a “private” fireworks malfunction needing medical treatment, according to Det. Sgt. Al Tharp. The names of the injured were not released.

In addition, four houses and 10 vehicles were damaged in the incident.

“The Griffith Police Department would like to thank the Highland, Merrillville, Schererville and Munster police departments, along with Superior EMS and the Schererville Fire Department, for their assistance in this incident,” Tharp said.

A visual survey of the block showed no significant outside damage to any of the homes on Arbogast.
