Shooting on South Side leaves man, 25, dead

A 25-year-old man died Saturday night after being shot in the South Shore neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Police said the man was walking along the train tracks in the 1700 block of East 71st Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. when two men approached him with guns.

Following what police said was an exchange of gunfire, the man was struck several times and then transported to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

At the scene, a man who said he was a relative of the victim crossed over the crime scene tape and ran toward police officers and asked for information about where his relative was. Police directed him away from the scene, and continued working the crime scene.

No one is in custody Sunday, and detectives from Area One were investigating.
