South Evanston apartment build evacuated for gas leak Monday

More than a dozen people were evacuated from an Evanston apartment building around noon on Monday after the Evanston Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a gas leak in the building, authorities said.

Residents standing outside the building in the 900 block of Judson Avenue said they smelled natural gas around noon Monday. Evanston firefighters arrived on the scene and evacuated the three-story brick building which has about 30 apartments. The building sits directly across from Lincoln School but the school was not evacuated.

Firefighters with breathing apparatus’ were seen entering the courtyard building but there were not any reports of injuries and the source of the gas leak had not been identified in the hour after fire fighters arrived.

Residents said Monday’s incident marks the second time in a year the building has been evacuated due to a gas leak. They were allowed back in the building a few hours later. No injuries were reported.
