Southland crime: Armed robberies in Lansing, Lynwood, carjacking in Tinley Park, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. 

Burbank

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: A tanker-truck driver postponed refilling the underground tanks March 4 at SNK Fuels, 6037 79th St., after he was threatened by a gun-wielding motorist who was fueling his pickup truck, police said.

Evergreen Park

GUN POSSESSION: Arshun D. Hayes, 21, Chicago, was arrested March 1 and accused of unlawful use of a weapon after officers encountered him holding a .40 mm handgun while parked outside a supermarket in the 9200 block of Western Avenue and determined he lacked required gun permits, police said.

Ford Heights

Anthony Wade, 34, 1400 block of Park Lane, Ford Heights, is scheduled to appear in Markham at a March 19 preliminary hearing, charged with manufacture/delivery of 1-15 grams of cocaine, unlawful possession of weapons by a felon and possession of a controlled substance, according to a Cook County court spokesperson. The Sheriff’s Organized Crime Division and Hostage Barricade Team took Wade into custody Feb. 23 at a residence about one-half mile from his home after recovering a loaded 9 mm handgun, cash and suspected cannabis, cocaine and phencyclidine (PCP), sheriff’s police said.

Lansing

ROBBERY ARREST: Charles E. Clark, 34, Chicago, was arrested Feb. 2 on a charge of armed robbery, aggravated robbery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Nov. 22 theft of $100 worth of energy drinks at gunpoint from Quick Trip, 17355 Torrence Ave., according to police and a Cook County court spokesperson. Clark’s arrest followed the serving of a felony retail theft charge to Eddie L. Jones, 55, in December at Stateville Correctional Center for his role, police said.

Lynwood

ARMED ROBBERY: One of three male intruders brandished a handgun during a March 9 robbery at Dollar General, 1615 Glenwood-Dyer Road, according to police reports.

Monee

SCISSOR STABBING: A Beach Park man, accused of stabbing a Schaumburg woman with scissors during a March 4 domestic battery, was charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery, according to police and Will County court records online. Monee officers encountered Lenear R. Harris, 57, the injured woman and a Good Samaritan in a ditch on Ridgeland Avenue near Monee-Manhattan Road, police said.

Oak Lawn

CLUB BURGLARY: A cash register drawer containing more than $400 was reported taken March 6 from Johnson-Phelps VFW Post No. 5220, 9514 92nd Ave. Security video shows a man wearing a surgical mask take the drawer and exit as the closing bartender was locking up, police said.

Orland Park

IDENTITY THEFT: Semaje M. Smith, 29, Chicago, was arrested Feb. 14 at Edible Arrangements, 9040 159th St., and subsequently charged with aggravated identity theft and possession of fraudulent identification while picking up an order made using another person’s identification, police said. Officers recovered an altered driver’s license with his photo, written information for using another person’s Internet Protocol address, five credit cards in other people’s names and multiple store receipts in other people’s names, police said. Smith, who also had 100 grams of cannabis in 3.5-gram packages, two digital scales and numerous boxes of cannabis items, was also charged with possessing cannabis with intent to deliver, police said.

RECEIPT SCAM: Police say a Chicago man who obtained a $20.47 “refund” from a store by submitting a receipt and matching store merchandise he hadn’t purchased had nearly two dozen more receipts from six stores. Izell Shepherd, 31, Chicago, was arrested Feb. 16 in the 9500 block of 159th Street and accused of obtaining refunds on merchandise he hadn’t purchased, police said.

Palos Heights

SWATTING PLOY: A woman’s frantic 1 p.m. Feb. 20 call telling police her father was being held at gunpoint near 135th Street and Ridgeland Avenue proved to be a hoax, with no danger to the father or residents, police said. The communication was typical of “swatting” calls, which are intended to spark an aggressive law enforcement response, police said.

Park Forest

GUN POSSESSION: Tamishia S. Jackson, 40, Davenport, Iowa, was arrested March 1 and accused of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon after officers escorting her from North Arbor Trail recovered a 9 mm pistol and loaded magazine and determined she lacked Iowa gun permits, police said.

GUN STOLEN: A 10 mm pistol was reported taken March 2 from a locked cargo van on Leims Road near Hemlock Street.

Tinley Park

CARJACKING ARREST: Jamal H. Britton, 33, 4500 block of 177th Street, Country Club Hills, is scheduled to appear in Cook County court at Bridgeview March 19, charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, according to police and sheriff’s records online. Britton, arrested March 3 by Chicago police, had a handgun Sept. 11 while demanding the victim’s vehicle in the 18700 block of Ridgeland Avenue but left without the vehicle when he realized he’d taken only the remote start, police said.

University Park

DOMESTIC: Delton L. Bates Jr., 28, 700 block of Sandpiper Court, University Park, was arrested March 3, charged with domestic battery/strangulation and domestic battery/prior arrest March 2, according to Will County court and sheriff’s records online.

Will County

THEFT ALLEGED: Deputies arrested Marcellus A. McDonald, 29, 20800 block of Hickory Creek Place, Frankfort, March 6 on a warrant charging him with stealing items worth more than $500 from Speedway, 7218 Lincoln Highway, on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13, according to Will County court and sheriff’s records online. McDonald is scheduled to appear at a March 31 pre-trial hearing.
