Southland crime: DUI crashes in Frankfort and Palos Heights, arson in Oak Forest, and more

Burbank

ATTEMPTED MURDER: Bashar Yasin, 27, Burbank, is scheduled to appear in Cook County Court, Bridgeview, July 30, charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with shooting another man in the abdomen at 7-Eleven, 5560 W. 87th St., on July 8, according to police and the Cook County circuit clerk’s office. Yasin was arrested after contacting officers and subsequently placed on electronic monitoring, police said. The victim was treated at a hospital and released, police said.

Crete

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: Isaiah W. Brown, 23, 100 block of Cornwall Avenue, Crete, is scheduled to be arraigned July 18 on two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to Will County court records online. Brown hit a relative in the head with an aluminum softball bat June 12 during an argument in that block, police said. The conscious victim/complainant was transported to a medical facility with a suspected fractured skull, police said.

Evergreen Park

ILLEGAL GUN: A young teen was taken into custody June 29 and accused of unlawful use of a weapon after officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun from the teen’s home in the 9000 block of Richmond Avenue, police said. The teen’s parents called officers for help after learning the gun was in the home, police said.

Frankfort

DUI CRASH: Rosemary McMahon, 59, Naperville, was arrested and accused of drunken driving during a June 29 crash investigation in a parking lot in the 22300 block of La Grange Road, police said.

Monee

A semi truck hit an ambulance, pushing it into a fire engine and injuring a firefighter/EMT responding to a motor vehicle crash Saturday on Interstate 57, according to the Monee Fire Protection District. The first responder was transported to a hospital with a minor head injury and the two heavily damaged vehicles were towed.

New Lenox

SHOPLIFTING GANG: A 20-year-old Joliet man accused of accompanying an armed juvenile and unarmed juvenile on a shoplifting spree Saturday is scheduled to appear in court July 29 on a felony burglary charge, according to police and Will County court records online. Oscar L. Leon-Baizan, 100 block of Adella Avenue, and the two youths were apprehended after one of the youths brandished a handgun at a customer who attempted to prevent them from taking liquor from Jewel-Osco, 475 Nelson Road, police said.

FALLING OBJECT: A motorist driving July 14 on Lincoln Highway between Cooper and Prairie roads reportedly escaped injury from an object thrown from the Metra overpass that damaged the vehicle’s bumper, hood and a door, police said.

Oak Forest

ARSON ALLEGED: A 38-year-old Chicago man accused of trying to use fireworks July 7 to ignite a home is scheduled to appear at a July 30 hearing at Bridgeview on a two-count felony charge, according to police and Cook County court records. Israel Vargas is charged with arson and possession of an incendiary/explosive device in the 4400 block of Adele Lane, court records show. Vargas placed fireworks near the home, poured a liquid on them and ignited the materials, causing the grass and shrubs to catch fire before walking away, police said.

Palos Heights

DUI CRASH: James Casey, 22, 10200 block of Cambridge Court, Mokena, was arrested and accused of drunken driving, reckless driving, driving without insurance and illegally transporting liquor after a July 13 head-on crash in the 6500 block of College Drive, police said.
