Southland crime: Grocery employee pepper sprayed, bus driver assaulted, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Bridgeview

ROBBERY CHARGE: A Chicago Ridge man accused of robbing two jewelry stores in Bridgeview at gunpoint is scheduled to appear in Cook County court at Bridgeview Thursday, according to police and a court spokesperson. Emad Elayyan, 31, 10600 block of Major Avenue, robbed Jawahir Jewelry, 8454 Harlem Ave., on July 13, 2023 and Jerusalem Jewelry, 9070 Harlem Avenue on Jan. 9, police said. Bridgeview officers, who were assisted in the investigation by the Illinois attorney general’s office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrested Elayyan Friday, police said. He remains in Cook County jail without bail, according to sheriff’s records online.

Burbank

DUI CRASH: Cornelius L. Edwards, 38, Chicago, is scheduled to appear in Cook County court at Bridgeview Oct. 8, charged with aggravated drunken driving, driving without a license, no proof of insurance and failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision Sept. 10 at 79th Street and Central Avenue, according to police and a Cook County circuit court spokesperson.

Crete

STRANGULATION: Atraya T. Cooper, 23, 1400 block of Wayne Drive, Crete, is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 2, charged with two counts of aggravated domestic battery/strangulation and three counts of aggravated battery to a pregnant or handicapped person on Sept. 16, according to Will County records online.

Evergreen Park

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: Maurice L. Abraham, 41, Chicago, was arrested and accused of aggravated battery during a Sept. 12 retail-theft investigation at a department store in the 2500 block of 95th Street after he was apprehended riding a bus and resisted, threatening to spit at multiple officers and kicking the squad car window, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: London V. Furcron, 24, 14300 block of State Street, Riverdale, was arrested Sept. 16 at 95th Street and Kedzie Avenue and accused of aggravated assault after standing on a bus behind the driver while holding a knife, police said.

Frankfort Township

ILLEGAL GUN: Willie R. Banks, 60, 17400 block of Park Lane, Country Club Hills, was arrested during a Sept. 7 traffic stop at Center and Laraway roads after deputies recovered a loaded .38 caliber revolver, police said. He was subsequently charged with two counts of being a felon possessing a firearm and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to Will County court records online. Banks, whose license was revoked with three prior drunken-driving arrests, was also charged with aggravated drunken driving, court records show.

Lockport

CRIMINAL DAMAGE: Joseph C. Hibbs, 40, 1700 block of Hamilton Street, Lockport, was arrested Sept. 18 on a warrant charging him with felony criminal damage to property on Aug. 18, according to Will County court records online. Hibbs knocked down and kicked into the street about 25 feet of fencing that a restaurant in the 1100 block of S. State Street was using to section off space for outside dining, police said. Will County sheriff’s police assisted in Hibbs’ arrest in unincorporated Lockport, police said.

Lockport Township

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY: A Lockport Township man who was the subject of a seven-month investigation involving national, state and local agencies was arrested Sept. 19 on a warrant charging him with three counts of possessing sexual images of a pre-teen child on April 4, according to the Will County sheriff’s office. Alberto A. Sunday, 48, 400 block of Bruce Road, Lockport Township, is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Oct. 18, according to Will County court records online. The investigation, begun in February by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, was picked up in April by the Illinois Attorney General’s office, which transferred the inquiry to Will County law enforcement, the sheriff’s office said.

New Lenox

DUI CRASH: A Tinley Park man still on probation from an aggravated drunken driving conviction from a 2021 crash in Mokena was scheduled to return to court Tuesday, charged with four counts of aggravated drunken/drugged driving in connection with an Oct. 14, 2023 crash, according to Will County court records online. David C. Lietz, 30, 7900 block of Trinity Circle, Tinley Park, caused a three-vehicle chain reaction on Interstate 80 near Interstate 55 before driving into a ditch and flipping his car several times, Illinois State Police said.

Oak Lawn

ILLEGAL GUN: Jajuan L. Mitchell, 25, Chicago, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon Sept. 17 after officers recovered a loaded .45 caliber gun from the vehicle he was a passenger in at Southwest Highway and Tulley Avenue and determined he lacked required permits, police said.

ROBBERY: One of two males pepper sprayed an employee at Jewel-Osco, 4650 103rd St., Sept. 19 who had tried to prevent them from leaving without paying for all of the deodorizer-fabric conditioner on the store’s shelf, police said.

Orland Park

DUI CRASH: Police say a Chicago man hit a concrete pole-holder at an auto dealership, drove through another dealership with his airbags deployed and continued driving for two miles Aug. 31 until officers stopped him at 159th Street and Harlem Avenue. Carl D. Mosby, 38, was arrested and accused of drunken driving with a blood-alcohol concentration above the legal limit, illegally transporting liquor and driving an unsafe vehicle, police said.

ASSAULT: Jermaine R. Winston, 29, Chicago, was arrested Sept. 1 and accused of assault after threatening to punch a female employee at Ulta, 15754 LaGrange Road, when she refused to accept a return of merchandise selling for $1,300 without the credit card used for the purchase, police said.

RETAIL THEFT: Jasmine K. Brame, 34, 11900 block of Central Park Avenue, Alsip, was arrested and accused of contributing to the criminal delinquency of a non-related minor, retail theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a theft-detection shielding device Sept. 2 at Jewel-Osco, 9350 159th St., after she and three small children took merchandise worth about $190, police said.

Palos Heights

ILLEGAL GUN: Jorge L. Rivera, 23, 7000 block of Illinois Route 83, Blue Island, was arrested and accused of unlawful use of a weapon during a Sept. 18 traffic stop after an officer recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun from the car and determined he lacked a concealed-carry license, police said.

Park Forest

DUI GUN: Carl L. Dillon, 36, 16400 block of Kedvale Avenue, Country Club Hills, was arrested and subsequently charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and drunken driving after officers recovered a 9 mm handgun during an Aug. 31 two-vehicle crash investigation at Wildwood Road and Wilshire Street, police said. Dillon, who lacked a required concealed-carry license, was also accused of concealing a firearm, endangering a child, disregarding a stop sign and failing to have a child safety seat, police said.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY: Officers investigating a break-in at a body shop in the first block of North Street Sept. 2 found the security gate forced open from the inside, a window pane broken on the building’s bay door and two cars that were being repaired parked on the street, police said. One car had its keys on the ground nearby and the other, which had a smashed front end, may have been used to smash the gate, police said.

Steger

REGISTRATION VIOLATION: Mark Monstvil, 54, homeless, was arrested during a Sept. 20 retail-theft investigation and subsequently charged with failing to register as a sex offender, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 10, according to Will County records online. Montsvil was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse to a young teen in 2009 when he was 39, according to Illinois State Police online records.
