Southland crime: Kidnapping charges in Palos Hills, armed robbery in Homewood, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Evergreen Park

ILLEGAL GUN: Amari J. Shaw, 22, Chicago, was arrested and accused of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after an officer recovered an uncased, loaded 9 mm handgun on a vehicle floor and determined Shaw lacked state-mandated gun credentials during a Feb. 3 traffic stop in the 3100 block of 94th Street, police said.

ILLEGAL GUN: Jalen A. Williams, 19, Chicago, was arrested and accused of unlawful use of a weapon after officers recovered a handgun from him during a Feb. 8 retail theft investigation at Sam’s Club, 9400 Western Ave., and determined Williams was too young to qualify for state-mandated gun credentials, according to Illinois law.

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY: Roy I. Robinson, 30, Chicago, was arrested and accused of aggravated robbery Feb. 9 at Ace Hardware, 3404 95th St., after knocking an employee to the ground while fleeing the store with stolen merchandise, police said.

Frankfort

IDENTITY THEFT: A Chicago man is charged in an identity theft scheme aimed at getting a $30,000 loan from a home improvement center, police said. Derrick G. Andrews II, 54, used the victim’s Social Security number and false identification at the Home Depot, 20101 La Grange Road, to make two purchases on June 3, 2023 and June 5, 2023 totaling nearly $3,000, police said. But an attempt two days later to obtain a $30,000 commercial loan from the company failed because the victim had closed the credit line.

Homewood

ARMED ROBBERY: Two masked individuals fled in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise Monday after displaying handguns and demanding money from the register at Verizon Wireless, 17575 Halsted St., police said.

Oak Lawn

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: Dennis J. Thomas, 57, Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery Feb. 5 at Advocate Christ Medical Center after punching in the face a security officer who had put hands on Thomas’ wheelchair handles, police said. The officer was interceding on behalf of staff who were being verbally abused by Thomas, a patient, signing himself out, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: A motorist told officers the driver of a minivan who rear-ended his vehicle Feb. 7 at 95th Street and Central Avenue refused to pull over, instead driving away after making an obscene gesture and displaying a handgun.

Palos Heights

DUI CRASH: Garret Neader, 38, 7900 block of Lakeview Court, Palos Heights, was arrested and accused of drunken driving Feb. 7 in the 11900 block of Harlem Avenue after knocking down a light pole in the Oak Hills subdivision, police said.

Palos Hills

KIDNAPPING CHARGED: Four men are charged with aggravated kidnapping of an 18-year-old Jan. 2 in the 10300 block of 75th Avenue, police said. Waseem Ahmad Barbarawi, 24, and Cler S. Kolaghassi, 38, both of the 7700 block of 87th Place, Bridgeview, and Amin S. Betuni, 36, and Mohammad S. Odtallah, 19, both of the 10300 block of 73rd Avenue, Palos Hills, were taken into custody between Jan. 23 and Feb. 5, police said. In a related action, Mona Odtallah, 55, 10300 block of 73rd Avenue, Palos Hills, was arrested Jan. 2 and charged with misdemeanor battery, police said. The victim told officers he had a prior relationship with a relative of the five and was confined for about 90 minute. The charge against the four men was upgraded to aggravated kidnapping because a firearm was involved, police said.

Peotone

STRANGULATION CHARGE: Joshua I Lloyd, 35, 100 block of Orchard Court, Peotone, is scheduled to appear at a Feb. 27 preliminary hearing on an eight-count felony charge that includes aggravated domestic battery/strangulation and unlawful restraint, according to Will County court records online. Lloyd was arrested during a Feb. 8 investigation and is also charged with aggravated assault/deadly weapon, court records show.

Steger

BITING CHARGE: Elvenord Vetus, 48, 3500 block of William Street, Steger, was arrested Feb. 11 and accused of biting and threatening a paramedic while being transported to a medical facility Feb. 8. Vetus bit the paramedic several times while also trying to bite restraining straps in the ambulance, police said. Vetus is charged with aggravated battery to a paramedic, according to Will County court records online.

University Park

ILLEGAL GUN: Deputies responding to a report of a pedestrian with a large knife arrested Elijah J. Ray, 21, 1400 block of Wayne Drive, Crete, Feb. 7 at Western Avenue and Exchange Street after determining he had a loaded handgun in his waistband without state-issued credentials, sheriff’s police said. Ray was subsequently charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to Will County court records online.
