Southland crime: Machete threats in Alsip and Beecher, armed robbery in Oak Lawn, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Alsip

CHOKING: Ahmad Khatatbeh, 57, Alsip, is scheduled to appear in Cook County court at Bridgeview Sept. 10, charged with aggravated battery/strangulation in connection with an Aug. 7 complaint, according to a court spokesperson. The victim, who was unable to call an ambulance for hours because her cellphone was taken, was treated at an area medical center for broken ribs and a punctured lung, police said.

MACHETE THREAT: Shekinah C. Docks, 26, 4600 block of 122nd Street, Alsip, was arrested Aug. 10 and accused of aggravated assault after threatening a former friend with a machete, police said.

Beecher

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: A Chicago Heights woman was taken into custody July 28 on accusations of domestic battery, criminal damage to property and trespassing to a residence after refusing to leave a home in the Pheasant Lake Estates development, police said. Kaci L. Harris, 37, 19400 block of Glenwood-Chicago Heights Road, also was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer after she pushed the responding deputy while inside and then outside the home while attempting to hit him, sheriff’s police said.

Bridgeview

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY: Richard P. Diaz, 44, 8700 block of 51st Avenue, Oak Lawn, was charged Aug. 6 with breaking into a home in the 8800 block of Harlem Avenue March 18, police said. Oak Lawn officers took Diaz into custody during an Aug. 6 traffic stop, police said.

Burbank

MACHETE THREAT: David S. Odette, 55, 7900 block of Mulligan Avenue, is scheduled to appear in Cook County court at Bridgeview Sept. 21 on three counts of aggravated assault stemming from a July 21 complaint in which he threatened neighbors with a machete, police said.

Crestwood

GIRLS APPROACHED: Detectives continue to investigate two reports of a man trying to physically contact a girl a few blocks south of Nathan Hale Middle School earlier this month. The morning of Aug. 6, a girl was walking north on Long Avenue between 135th and 137th streets when the driver of a southbound car attempted to talk with her, turned around, pulled up next to her and started to exit the vehicle as she fled, police said. Three days earlier, a man walking east on 137th Street in the afternoon passed a girl walking her dog, turned around and then grabbed the girl’s shoulders, prompting her to run home, police said.

Crete

RELEASE REJECTED: A Will County judge on Aug. 13 denied a Kokomo, Indiana man’s pretrial release request, agreeing with prosecutors he meets the state’s dangerousness standard by posing a real and present threat to the safety of the community, according to court records online. Christian Saavedra, 32, charged with aggravated drunken driving/fourth offense, was transporting liquor when stopped on July 1, police said. He is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Aug. 27, court records show.

Monee

COUNTERFEIT PAYMENT: A man who received 10 $100 bills while completing a $900 Facebook Marketplace transaction for a set of tires Aug. 9 at a truck stop told police he realized only four of the bills were real after he was unable to contact the buyer to return the $100 overpayment.

New Lenox

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY: An individual took cash from the register at Pizza Mia, 830 Laraway Road, after forcing open the front door a little after midnight, Aug. 13.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY: The front door of a home in the 400 block of Rossford Lane was forced open and a safe containing jewelry and personal documents stolen during a residential break-in reported Saturday.

Oak Lawn

ARMED ROBBERY: A man with a gun robbed the Shell gas station, 10601 Cicero Ave., at about 10:40 p.m. Aug. 4, as several customers pumped gas, police said. No one was injured, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: An Aug. 6 traffic dispute between a tow truck driver and another motorist that began at 105th Street and Central Avenue ended with the tow truck driver’s arrest for aggravated assault, police said. Mazen M. Ismail, 21, undisclosed block of Mayfield Avenue, Oak Lawn, pointed a gun at the other motorist in the 5400 block of 115th Street, police said.

Orland Park

MACHINE PISTOL: A Homewood man was arrested with a Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun equipped with a switch to convert it to automatic and a loaded extended magazine on gun during an Aug. 2 traffic stop at 151st Street and Regent Drive, police said. Akeem D. Thompson, 35, first block of Ravisloe Lane, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/no state gun permits, police said.

EMPLOYEE THEFT: Sidra Naseem, 29, 15700 block of 86th Avenue, Orland Park, was arrested Aug. 2 at Kohl’s, 3 Orland Park Place, and charged with felony retail theft after using her position as an employee to take merchandise collectively valued at $1,259.39 from July 11 through Aug. 1, police said.

Palos Hills

CARS STOLEN: A 2017 Chevrolet SS, a 2016 Corvette, and a 2018 Cadillac CTS-V were reported stolen Aug. 16 from the parking lot at Baha Auto Group, 11001 Southwest Highway. Police said several people took part in the theft, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m.

Steger

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: A Steger Fire Department paramedic’s face and neck were scratched by a 24-year-old man who also threatened to harm him and his family during an Aug. 4 ambulance trip to a medical facility, police said. Police declined to identify the suspected offender, citing patient confidentiality.

Tinley Park

SHOOTING: A teenager sustained nonlife-threatening injuries during a shooting Sunday near McCarthy Park, police said in a statement online. Officers secured the scene and have identified the offender, police said.
