Southland crime: Stabbings in Bridgeview and Steger, road rage in Homewood

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilty.

Bridgeview

STABBING ALLEGED: A 29-year-old Casper, Wyoming woman was charged with battery after using a pocket knife to stab another woman July 4 while inside a long-haul sleeper semi truck parked in the 9000 block of Beloit Avenue, police said. Nicole Naslund was arrested and charged after being treated at University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago and the other woman was transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for treatment, police said.

Burbank

RECKLESS SHOOTING: Cristian Gonzalez, 23, 5800 block of 82nd Street, Burbank, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm after twice firing a 9 mm handgun into the air outside the home July 4, police said.

Chicago Ridge

BATTERY: Whitney Evans, 32, Evergreen Park, was arrested and accused of battery June 27 in the 600 block of Chicago Ridge Mall Drive after grabbing an officer’s wrists and pulling the officer several times during an altercation, police said.

Crete

RECKLESS GUN: A 24-year-old Crete man accused of shooting a handgun inside a home several times with children present June 29 is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Monday, charged with three counts of reckless discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated assault/discharging a firearm, according to police and Will County court records online. Sergio G. Castro was arraigned July 2 on the four felony charges, court records show. Officers responding to the 4:30 a.m. call in the 400 block of Crete Boulevard took Castro into custody, recovered the 9 mm handgun and safely removed another adult, a teen and several youngsters during a tense domestic situation, police said.

Evergreen Park

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: Charles L. Price, 59, Chicago, was arrested and accused of aggravated battery June 24 at Sam’s Club, 9400 Western Ave., after punching a security guard in the face when told he couldn’t enter through an exit, police said.

ILLEGAL AMMUNTION: Yanta K. Lawon Hoskins, 27, Alexandria, Minnesota, was arrested and accused of illegally possessing ammunition and Kenyatta N. Hardy, 46, Chicago, was arrested and accused of theft after officers recovered an undisclosed number of .40 caliber bullets under his seat and a stolen cellphone during a June 24 stolen-vehicle investigation in the 9500 block of Western Avenue, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: Chantel S. Coklow, 50, 9200 block of Trumbull Avenue, Evergreen Park, was taken into custody June 26 in the 8700 block of Troy Avenue and accused of aggravated assault after after witnesses told officers she drove off the road and attempted to run over another person, police said.

Frankfort Square

A 38-year-old Country Club Hills man was sentenced to four years in prison July 2 after pleading guilty to aggravated unlawful use of a loaded weapon and aggravated drunken driving/fourth arrest, according to Will County court records online. Deputies arrested Maurice Spraggins, 18900 block of Loras Lane, after recovering a loaded 9 mm handgun in August 2022 while checking on Spraggins, who they found asleep at the wheel in the intersection of Frankfort Square and St. Francis roads, police said.

Homer Glen

FINANCIAL CRIMES: A 26-year-old Homer Glen man accused of participating in a criminal enterprise that bilked the Small Business Administration out of more than $100,000 in 2022 made his first court appearance June 26, charged with a nine-count felony charge, according to Will County sheriff’s police and court records online. Justin D. James, 16000 block of Josef Drive, faces two counts of theft, three counts of loan fraud, three counts of wire fraud and one count of income tax fraud, court records show.

Homewood

ROAD RAGE: Daniel Vueluas, 37, 15700 block of Wallace Avenue, Harvey, was arrested June 17 and accused of aggravated assault and criminal damage to property in the 15700 block of Dixie Highway after yelling at another driver, exiting his vehicle and smashing the other driver’s rear windshield with a baseball bat, police said.

Lansing

FIREWORKS CANCELED: An annual Independence Day fireworks display that drew about 400 people to Lan-Oak Park July 3 was canceled after youths climbed a security fence, causing it to fall to the ground. Local law enforcement, assisted by surrounding police departments, moved the dozens of attendees out of the park without arrests or injuries, police said.

Lockport

STRANGULATION: Dwayne D. Dudley, 25, Chicago, was arraigned Monday on a charge of aggravated domestic battery/strangulation in connection with a June 21 event in the 500 block of Parkview Lane that began the previous day, according to police and Will County records online.

New Lenox

HOSPITAL THEFT: Crystal S. Kelly, 35, Chicago, is scheduled to appear at a July 31 preliminary hearing, charged with felony theft, according to Will County court records online. Kelly took an employee’s backpack containing personal and hospital property June 12 from Silver Cross Hospital, police said.

Oak Lawn

SHOT FIRED: An Oak Lawn resident was shot at July 1 near 52nd Avenue and Kimball Place, but was uninjured, while pursuing a vehicle containing people she believed had burglarized her vehicle.

BURGLARY: A 9 mm pistol was among items reported stolen July 1 from an apartment in an undisclosed block of Mobile Avenue.

PHONEY MONEY: Eyad R. Abuserrieh, 20, Oakbrook Terrace, was charged with forgery July 2 at a restaurant in the 5600 block of 87th Street after trying to pay for a $2.48 order with a $100 bill containing the word “copy,” police said.

Palos Hills

VANDALISM: A witness reported seeing two people wearing ski masks enter Stagg High School’s football field July 6 and ignite fireworks in containers around the field, causing several fires. North Palos Fire Protection District extinguished the fires.

Posen

CARJACKING ARREST: A 32-year-old Chicago man accused of taking a car at gunpoint is scheduled to appear at a July 22 preliminary hearing in Cook County court, Markham, charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, according to the Cook County clerk’s office. Posen investigators tracked the vehicle, stolen at 5:30 a.m. July 3, to an address in Calumet City, set up surveillance and took Marion D. Minter into custody there, police said.

Steger

STABBING ALLEGED: A 24-year-old Steger man accused of damaging a neighbor’s fence with a stick and then stabbing one neighbor in the back and a second neighbor in the face during a July 4 argument in the 3400 block of Sally Drive is scheduled to appear at a July 29 hearing, according to police and Will County court records online. Jason T. Griggs is charged with three counts of aggravated battery and one count of disorderly conduct, court records show.

University Park

STRANGULATION: Jeanetta A. Wright, 33, 800 block of Oakside Lane, University Park, is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing July 29, charged with domestic battery/strangulation in connection with a July 4 event in that block, according to police and Will County court records online.
