Southside man critically wounds woman believing she was a burglar

A 59-year-old man critically wounded a woman in the face overnight because he thought someone was trying to break into his home in the Woodlawn neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before midnight, the man was inside his residence in the 6700 block of South Prairie Avenue when he believed someone was attempting to break into his home. He fired one shot when he opened his door and struck a woman a woman he knew in the right side of the face, police said.

The man called 911 for an ambulance and a 54-year-old woman was taken in critical condition to UChicago Medicine.

A weapon was recovered from the scene, and detectives were investigating.
