Swallow Cliff Chapter, NSDAR honors local cadets
Two area high school students received special awards recently when representatives of the Swallow Cliff Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution traveled to JROTC awards ceremonies at Shepard High School in Palos Heights and Richards High School in Oak Lawn.
They gave the DAR JROTC award, consisting of a medal and certificate, to Navy Cadet Emily Schrode at Richards, presented by Barbara Lamb and chapter Regent Audra Gray. At Shepard, Linda Michaels, Kate Schneider and Vice Regent Gale Shafer presented the award to Air Force Cadet Command Chief Dulce Lopez.
These special awards are given to cadets of outstanding ability and achievement who have demonstrated qualities of loyalty, patriotism, dependability, leadership and good character. These students must also have a record of military and scholastic achievement during their participation in the JROTC program, ranking in the top 25% of their JROTC class and their high school class.
Sandburg names Sheamus Murphy division chair
The Consolidated High School District 230 School Board approved the hiring of Sheamus Murphy as division chair for driver’s education, health and physical education at Sandburg High School.
Murphy has taught physical education, health and driver’s education at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island since 2019. Prior to Eisenhower, Murphy taught physical education and driver’s education at Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School in Chicago for five years where he started the school’s driver education program.
In addition to teaching, he served both schools as the assistant athletic director and head football coach. In nine years as a head football coach, his teams qualified for the state playoffs seven consecutive seasons, winning two conference titles and compiling a record of 54-31.
“Sheamus’s experience and proven ability to develop positive relationships with all stakeholders and the passion he has for the Sandburg school community, make this a perfect match,” Sandburg High School Principal Dr. Derrick Smith said. “We know that he will bring his collaborative style, leadership and student-centered approach to this division chair position.”
Alsip’s Woods earns award at Baldwin Wallace University
Alsip’s Taylor Woods was honored at the 22nd Annual Dr. Obie Bender Multicultural Awards at Baldwin Wallace University during the spring 2024 semester. These awards honor and affirm the contributions of underrepresented members of the Baldwin Wallace community as well as those who contribute to the overall spirit of inclusion.
Woods, a graduate of Noble Charter School Muchin College Preparatory majoring in dual primary and primary intervention specialist, received the CFI Volunteer of Year Award. The award celebrates volunteers who play a crucial role in supporting the Center for Inclusion and are an expression of gratitude from the Center for Inclusion team for their time and dedication.
Manhattan’s Gordon recognized during Mount Union convocation
Manhattan’s Shawna Gordon recently was awarded The Mary Evelyn Cook Weber Prize at the 2024 Mount Union Honors Convocation. This prize is awarded to an outstanding junior art major.
Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducts new members
Richton Park’s Dominique Townsend (SIU-Carbondale) and Tinley Park’s Alexander Sebastian (Bradley University) recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Hickory Hills’ Lencki competes in Shell Eco-Marathon Americas
Sidney Lencki from Hickory Hills was part of “Team Carbonair,” a group of students from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) that competed at the 2024 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas, which is one of the world’s leading energy-efficiency engineering programs for students.
Lewis students present research at ACCA symposium
Local students were among the Lewis University students who presented work at the 56th annual Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area Student Symposium on April 13 at Lewis University in Romeoville. They included Frankfort’s Steven Roberts (physics), Homer Glen’s Rebecca Rozhon (biology), Lockport’s Emilia Nykaza (psychology) and Manhattan’s Andrew Murphy (biochemistry).
