Southwest Side man detained in slaying of brother, partner inside Gage Park home

A Chicago man accused of shooting and killing his brother and his brother’s partner in their Gage Park home over the weekend before stabbing a woman at a nearby sports bar was ordered detained Wednesday.

Robert Romo, 57, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery in the fatal shooting of Richard M. Romo, 63, and Rita Chavez, 64, about 10 p.m. Sunday in the 5300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, according to Chicago police and court records.

Police responded to reports of a person shot and found a door open in the rear of an apartment building. When police searched the apartment, they said they found a man with a gunshot wound to the head and a woman with multiple injuries. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the deaths homicide, caused by multiple gunshot wounds and sharp force injuries.

Romo, of the Clearing neighborhood, was arrested Sunday minutes after the shooting when officers responded to an assault in progress at Just One More Sports Bar, located across the street at 5332 S. Kedzie Ave., according to court records.

When officers entered the bar, they found Romo holding a knife in his right hand and a handgun in his left hand, an arrest report stated. Officers tased Romo after giving “multiple orders to drop the weapons,” which he didn’t listen to, the report said. Officers were then able to disarm Romo and handcuff him.

While at the bar, Romo stabbed a 44-year-old woman with a knife, the report said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. Romo was also taken to the hospital for a possible stroke, records stated.

Romo remained hospitalized Wednesday and didn’t appear in court. Cook County Judge Deidre Dyer continued the case until Monday but ordered Romo detained.
