Star Party to be held at historic Farnsworth House in Plano

The Edith Farnsworth House Historic Site at 14520 River Road in Plano will host a Star Party at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The event will feature a self-guided tour of the Edith Farnsworth House grounds, followed by a presentation about the solar system by the Fox Valley Astronomical Society. After the discussion, weather permitting, the Astronomical Society will have its telescopes set up for attendees to view the night sky.

Moon Festival scheduled in Aurora

Pacifica Square at 4360 E. New York St. in Aurora will host a Moon Festival from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.

The free event will feature a variety of activities and performances to celebrate Asian culture, traditions and community spirit, according to a press release about the festival.

There will also be a variety of food from local vendors and food trucks, offering a taste of Asian cuisine and more, organizers said. There will also be more than 40 booths featuring vendors showcasing a variety of goods and services, officials said.

The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, has been celebrated for thousands of years across various Asian countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Singapore, according to the release.

Volunteers sought for Fox River clean-up event

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County and Friends of the Fox River will hold a special clean-up event called “It’s Our Fox River Day” from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Glenwood Park Forest Preserve at 1644 S. River St. in Batavia.

During the event, volunteers will work to beautify the river, its banks and the nearby trails. Organizers will provide drinking water, snacks, disposable gloves and trash bags, according to a press release about the event.

Eye on Aging set in Batavia

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce will host its Eye on Aging event from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Lincoln Inn Banquets, 1345 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia.

The event is focused on planning a successful retirement and creating an intentional, healthy aging strategy, organizers said. Participants can visit vendor booths to discover local resources, interact with experts and gain other information concerning retirement and aging.

Breakout presentations at the event will tackle various aspects of aging well, organizers said. The topics to be addressed include estate planning, financial planning, aging in place and downsizing, safety at home, physical fitness and more.

There is no cost to attend. A cash bar and complimentary appetizers will be available, and all attendees will receive a tote bag – while supplies last – and a raffle ticket to win $100 in Batavia Chamber Bucks, officials said.

Nature hikes planned in Kane County

The Kane County Forest Preserve District will offer three upcoming naturalist-led hikes at sites in the district.

Each hike will feature a district naturalist who will occasionally stop to interpret the ecology of the area, though the main focus is on covering ground and enjoying the outdoors, district officials said.

The hikes, which are open to those 18 years old and older, are set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls at 40W095 Freeman Road in Gilberts; from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Campton Forest Preserve at 4N379 Town Hall Road in St. Charles; and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Prairie Green Forest Preserve at 698 N. Peck Road in Geneva.

Will County to host Lunch and Learn webinars

The Will County Emergency Management Agency will host a series of free, 30-minute Lunch and Learn webinars as part of National Preparedness Month.

Each will take place from noon to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays in September and will provide practical information to keep residents safe, a news release said.

On Sept. 11, pet owners can learn how to prepare their animals for an emergency, including natural disasters.

Nuclear safety is the featured topic Sept. 18. With two nuclear power plants in Will County or on its border, residents can learn about how the plants operate and how to receive emergency alerts, officials said.

The program wraps up Sept. 25 with a session focusing on financial preparedness should you experience an unexpected expense or a catastrophic weather event.
