Suspect identified in fatal Pullman police shooting

The man shot to death by a Chicago Police officer early Thursday during a domestic violence incident in Pullman has been identified by authorities.

Devon L. Smith, 43, was fatally shot, according to an identification from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Smith was shot by an officer Thursday morning after police were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of East 100th Street for a call of a domestic disturbance involving a gun, the Chicago Police Department previously said.

Smith lived in the same area of Pullman where the shooting occurred, according to the medical examiner information. He previously served time in Illinois prisons for attempted murder, aggravated battery and home invasion, court records show.

Cook County court records show Smith, in August 2002, was found guilty of aggravated battery and home invasion with a firearm. He was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

In August 2006, records show, Smith pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, though he received credit for more than 500 days spent in the Cook County Jail as his case progressed.

Thursday morning, CPD officers entered the home and “encountered an armed male offender and female victim inside a bedroom.” The female, whose age was not released, was able to escape the bedroom while responding officers tried to de-escalate the situation, police said, but Smith turned a gun toward an officer. Police then opened fire, according to the department.

Smith was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. A weapon was recovered by police at the scene, authorities said. Smith’s autopsy results were not known as of Friday morning.
