Suspect identified in fatal Wadsworth hit-and-run accident

Lake County authorities are investigating a weekend hit-and-run accident in Wadsworth that killed a bicyclist.

Police have identified the suspected driver, a Winthrop Harbor man, but charges had yet to be filed Monday, Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.

The accident happened Friday at around 11:45 p.m. on Dilleys Road, just south of Wadsworth Road.

A woman was riding a bicycle north when she was struck from behind by a GMC SUV. She was thrown from her bike, and then she was struck by a southbound Hyundai Elantra being driven by a 23-year-old Waukegan man.

The woman, who may have been riding home from her job, was dead when officers arrived, Covelli said.

Her bike became lodged under the SUV as it left the scene, police said. A witness reported seeing the SUV dragging a bike as it traveled east on Wadsworth Road.

Police were able to identify the SUV and trace it to a Winthrop Harbor residence. The suspected driver is a 32-year-old man, police said. Officers seized the vehicle for evidence.

The identity of the victim had yet to be released Monday.
