Suspect in deadly River North shooting turns himself in

The suspect in a River North shooting that left one woman dead and another critically injured turned himself in last Friday evening, according to Chicago Police.

Demetris Shorter of Davenport, Iowa, turned himself in on Feb. 28 around 5:50 p.m. He was charged with one felony count for first degree murder and one felony count for attempted first degree murder, police said.

Two people were shot at a hotel at the 300 block of West Grand Avenue on Feb. 22 around 8:15 p.m. Police said they found a 29-year-old woman in a hotel lobby with a gunshot wound to her neck, who was transported to Northwestern Hospital in good condition. Upon further investigation, police said they also found a 32-year-old woman in a guest room with a gunshot wound. The 32-year-old was transported to Northwestern Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released.

According to police, the 29-year-old told police that she was shot by an unidentified male (now identified as Shorter) who fled the scene in a tan SUV last seen heading eastbound on Grand Avenue.
