SUV crashes into sandwich shop, nearly hits man dining

A vehicle crashed into a Subway sandwich shop in Evanston Tuesday, April 29, shattering the front window glass and coming to a stop shortly before hitting a man dining in the eatery, according to Evanston police and fire officials.

At approximately 2:59 p.m., police and fire responded to a crash at the Subway in the 3300 block of Central Street in the northwest area of Evanston, per a police statement. The driver pulled into the lot but may have failed to put the SUV in park, causing it to roll into the building, they said.

No injuries were reported, they said.

Ashok Vyas, a restaurant employee, said “There was a lot of noise when it happened because all the glass was cracked in front.”

He confirmed that the vehicle, a red Lexus, came to a halt about a couple of feet before hitting a man who was having a sandwich.

The restaurant reopened Friday, he said.

Evanston Building Inspection Services responded to assess the integrity of the structure, according to police.

Police also said the driver has a valid license and insurance, and because the crash occurred on private property, no citations were issued.
