A Northwest Regional SWAT negotiating team persuaded a Cedar Lake man to safety after he had a medical crisis, police said late Monday night.
Cedar Lake Police were sent in the early morning hours of March 10 to the 13500 block of Dewey Street to check in with the man, Cedar Lake Deputy Chief Carl Brittingham said in a release. The man, 43, is under a court order to receive medical services, and police have been working with him and his family, he said.
After briefly talking to the man, who became agitated and retreated into the house, police called in NWR SWAT, who negotiated with the man to get the help he needed, Brittingham said. He was taken to a local hospital without incident.
The man was not armed at any point, and there was no danger to anyone outside the home, Brittingham said.
“The Cedar Lake Police Department commends the actions of our Officers working today: Commander Tom Kidd, Sgt. Ryan Miller, Cpl. Richard Pennington, Officer Dustin Corbin, and Officer Ben King,” Brittingham said in the release. “The Cedar Lake Police Department has three Officers assigned to NWR SWAT, two of whom are negotiators.”
The Cedar Lake Fire Department assisted.
