A teen was sentenced to probation Friday after admitting he had a gun inside Gary Lighthouse Charter School.
He was originally charged with shooting it inside the school.
Jermaine Robinson, 17, pleaded guilty to Level 6 felony possession of a firearm on school property.
His sentence called for two years on probation, with 198 days credited for time he already spent in jail while the case was pending.
As part of the plea deal, he has to do 30 hours of community service and get his GED.
Gary Police responded at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 17 to the school, 725 Clark Road for a shots fired call.
Principal Janora Holmes told police one bullet was fired at 8:53 a.m. The school was locked down, since they didn’t find the gun.
School staff found bullet fragments in the bathroom. They took Robinson to the Dean’s office to wait for the cops. Police recovered a bullet casing in the bathroom.
Security footage showed four students, including Robinson coming out of the bathroom after the gun was fired. The other three boys were not implicated.
While police were there, he tried to jump out of the window in the Dean’s office and was “mouthy” with officers while he was talking on the phone with his mom.
Officers pinned him against the wall and patted him down, finding a magazine and gun parts.
He tried to pull away from an officer, who grabbed him by the handcuffs.
“I run this,” he said.
The black Taurus handgun had 15 live rounds in the magazine, according to the affidavit.
