The Tribune’s Quotes of the Week quiz for Jan. 4

Happy New Year, quiz readers!

To start the week, former President Jimmy Carter, the humble peanut farmer who won the presidency and then redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian, died Sunday at the age of 100.

The new year started off on a bleak note with Wednesday’s terrorist attack in New Orleans that left at least 14 dead and more than 30 others injured. Consequently, the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame — slated to be played about a mile away at the Superdome later that same day — was postponed. For some Chicagoans, Notre Dame fans and former New Orleans residents, the news of the attack hit especially hard, and they offered their condolences to the victims and moved to aid those affected.

Meanwhile, Illinois is ringing in the new year with new laws. Some 300 state laws took effect Jan. 1, including a minimum wage hike, measures to address artificial intelligence and new road safety rules. Other changes for 2025? Every police officer in Illinois is now required to wear a body camera, an overhaul of Cook County criminal court is coming, plus Chicago residents can expect tax hikes on streaming services and cable TV, personal property leases and grocery bags.

But while some things change, others stay the same: Republican Mike Johnson won reelection as speaker of the House on Friday.

And concluding a sucky year for Chicago sports fans, the Blackhawks had a sad showing at Tuesday’s Winter Classic, suffering a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the rival St. Louis Blues.
