The Venue in downtown Aurora to show classic horror film

The Venue in downtown Aurora will present a free screening of the film “Night of the Living Dead” on Sunday evening, according to a press release about the event.

“Night of the Living Dead” is an American independent horror film directed by George A. Romero and starring Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea and Karl Hardman. It premiered on Oct. 1, 1968.

Doors for the screening at The Venue open at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The movie will start at 7 p.m.

The Venue is a live music performance room at 21 S. Broadway in downtown Aurora. The bar at the facility offers a wide selection of craft beer and other beverages and will be open during the screening,

The Venue’s entrance is along Water Street Mall, adjacent to City Hall and Mundy Park.

Rummage sale planned in Yorkville

The annual fall rummage and bake sale will be held Friday and Saturday at Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ, 409 Center Parkway in Yorkville.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, organizers said.

The sale will feature a wide selection of household goods, kitchen items, linens, toys, games, books, clothing for all ages, shoes, furniture, tools, holiday decor, collectibles, jewelry and more, according to a press release about the event.

A tradition of the two-day event is the bake sale featuring an assortment of home-baked goods, which sell out quickly, according to the release.

Saturday is Bag Day when participants can fill a provided, brown paper grocery bag for $3. Remaining larger items that do not fit in a grocery bag may be purchased at half price that day, organizers said.

Only cash or check will be accepted as payment during the sale, according to the release.

Proceeds from the sale will support church programs, ministries, building needs and charitable organizations that help provide for the needs of people in the Yorkville area and beyond, organizers said.

Prescription drug take-back event set

The Kendall County Coroner’s Office is hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kendall County Government Campus on John Street in Yorkville.

The event is part of the DEA’s National Take Back Initiative and is being hosted in partnership with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Yorkville Police Department, organizers said.

In addition to prescription medications, the site will also accept used or unused medical sharps for destruction as well as unexpired diabetic supplies and medications for donation to Insulin For Life, a non-profit organization which directs donated supplies to help patients in over 74 developing nations, according to a press release about Saturday’s event.

Drop-offs will be collected in a drive-through area, and no information is collected from participants, organizers said.

Día de los Muertos concert scheduled

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will present a Dia de los Muertos/All Souls Day concert at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.

It is being held in partnership with the Gail Borden Public Library and the city of Elgin, according to a news release.

The program will feature Jose Carlos Díaz singing favorites like “Sabor a mi” and “La Llorona” and Latin American music, including “Sobre las olas” and “Huapango,” the release said. Elgin’s BFH dance ensemble, formerly known as Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotlalso, will perform with the symphony.
