A whole variety of the carved pumpkins can be seen in this photo from a 1910s Halloween party that took place in Naperville. According to information from the Naperville Heritage Society/Naper Settlement, members of the Kline family are in attendance. The kids aren’t in costumes but the woman’s outfit appears to be in the vein of Mother Goose or Little Bo Peep. Credit Irish immigrants with the tradition of carving pumpkins, a practice they brought with them when they began migrating the United States. It’s tied to Celtic festival Samhain, a celebration marking the end of summer and beginning of the new year on Nov. 1, according to www.britannica.com.
