The Way We Were: In some ways, Naperville’s Centennial Beach has never changed

With temperatures expected to be in the high 80s Monday and Tuesday, what better time to look back at Naperville’s Centennial Beach. This postcard photo is undated but based on the swimsuit styles for both the men and women, it was likely taken sometime in the 1930s. That would coincide with the beach opening in 1932 and completion of the bathouse by the Works Progress Administration in 1934. Admission fees for the beach’s opening year were 10 cents for children, 35 cents for adults (escalating to 50 cents on holidays), according to the history compiled by the Naperville Park District.
