TikTok user doesn’t believe authorities’ explanation regarding Illinois man’s apparent hanging death

A woman on TikTok is trying to bring awareness to the apparent hanging death of an Aurora man in North Carolina on Wednesday.

TikTok user scottieprimpin said in a video yesterday that her 21-year-old cousin, Javion Magee, was found “hanging from a tree” in the city of Henderson.

“The police officers are trying to say that he went to Walmart and purchased the rope and hung himself,” the woman said. “We obviously don’t believe that.”

According to the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call around 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 about a dead person in the 200 block of Vanco Mill Road in Henderson, North Carolina.

Deputies would find a Black man “near the base of a tree in a seated position with a rope wrapped around his neck,” a news release said. The other end of the rope was attached to the tree, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man was later identified as 21-year-old Javion Magee of Aurora, Illinois. Magee was taken to a medical examiner for an autopsy, and the case remains under investigation, authorities said.

The TikTok user said her cousin was in North Carolina because he drove trucks. “This is just very devastating for my family, and we really … need to push this story out there,” the woman said.

The woman’s video had nearly three million views as of Friday morning.
