‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’ is 2024’s One Book, One Chicago title

“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” has been selected as the fall 2024 title for the Chicago Public Library’s One Book, One Chicago program.

The novel by Gabrielle Zevin was announced Wednesday by Mayor Brandon Johnson, CPL commissioner Chris Brown, CPL board president Linda Johnson Rice and others in an event at the Harold Washington Library Center’s Winter Garden.

“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,” published in 2022 (Knopf), is the story of friends Sam and Sadie who create a successful video game company after meeting years before as adolescents in a pediatric hospital. A New York Times review characterized it as “a love letter to the literary gamer.”

Programs devoted to the selection will continue through December, including game-writing workshops with Story Studio Chicago, music performances inspired by video game soundtracks in partnership with Old Town School of Folk Music, screenings of video game-inspired films and lectures on the history of video games in Chicago. The Art Institute will display artwork by Katsushika Hokusai that inspired the book’s cover, and the American Writers Museum will open an exhibit on writing in games. Zevin will speak at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at Harold Washington Library Center.

Zevin, of New York and Los Angeles, has published books for both adults and younger readers; “Tomorrow” was her fifth novel for adults. The library’s One Book, One Chicago program, now in its 23rd year, encourages Chicago-area readers to join in a citywide book club to read selected books.
