A young woman reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis drove her car into Lake Michigan over the weekend in Waukegan, according to police.
After driving into the water, the woman, an 18-year-old Gurnee resident, crawled out of the car through a window and made her way back to the shore. She was not seriously injured and was brought to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
The woman drove into the lake in the 600 block of Market Street around 11:15 p.m. Saturday. Officers who responded found a 2008 Honda Civic in the lake.
The woman made statements to authorities about not wanting to live anymore, and said she intentionally drove into the lake, police said.
A tow truck was called, and it removed the car.
