Two hospitalized for smoke inhalation after fire at Portage motel

First responders with the Portage Fire Department arriving for a call about a motel fire Monday night found four occupants hanging out their second-floor windows with heavy smoke and flames present, according to a release.

The fire department was called around 11:40 p.m. June 3 to the Econo Lodge, 6101 Melton Road, for the fire, and crews were notified the building was filling with smoke coming from an unknown location, the fire department said.

The motel’s occupants were evacuated via ladders and interior search crews. Two victims were transported to area hospitals for smoke inhalation; their condition is unknown.

Firefighters went inside and found the fire originated in a utility closet and extended into the motel’s hallway.

The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
