Two rescued after fire in South Holland home

Two people were rescued Monday morning after a fire tore through a home in South Holland, officials said.

The fire broke out at 3:15 a.m. in a garage at a home on Louis Avenue, according to a news release from the village. Upon arrival, crews found an attached garage burning and the fire spread to the attic of the home, the release states.

The home was damaged extensively by the flames, including the partial collapse of the roof, leaving it uninhabitable, said South Holland fire Chief Brian Kolosh,

Crews put out the fire by 4 a.m., Kolosh said.

Crews found a resident in a wheelchair in the backyard after he had escaped through a rear garage door, and officers were able to get him to safety, the release states. Firefighters rescued a second resident by pulling him through a bedroom window.

The resident in the wheelchair was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in Munster, where his condition was listed as stable, Kolosh said. The transport was precautionary, and the resident did not have any injuries, he said.

Kolosh said the Red Cross is helping the residents find temporary housing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.

Fire departments from Thornton, Glenwood, Dolton, Harvey, Phoenix, Calumet City, Lansing, Homewood, Country Club Hills and Flossmoor assisted.
