A two-time Aurora felon out on parole for a narcotics conviction was arrested in Naperville on charges he had a loaded handgun and illegal drugs in possession, officials said.
Parion Lane, 23, of the 500 block of Superior Street, was pulled over by police in a traffic stop about 1 a.m. Sunday at 14th Avenue and Main Street after being spotted at a gas station a few blocks away with expired plates, a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and Naperville Police Department said.
As the officers watched the car prior to the stop, one of them “observed the driver, later identified as Lane, making furtive movements towards the driver’s side floorboard,” the release said. Later, when Lane got out of the vehicle during the stop, he “leaned in towards the driver’s side floorboard and then fled the scene on foot,” the release said.
Lane was taken into custody following a brief chase. When searching him and his car, police found a loaded 9 mm handgun on the driver’s side floorboard and 16 grams of ecstasy in his possession, the release said.
At the request of prosecutors Monday, DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted a motion that Lane be held in the county jail pending court proceedings on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender and unlawful possession of a controlled substance and multiple misdemeanor offenses, including resisting a police officer.
“As a convicted felon who is currently on parole, Mr. Lane has forfeited his right to legally possess a firearm,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “Consequently, if these allegations are proven true, he now finds himself facing a possible penalty of between six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.”
Police Chief Jason Arres said, “Every day, our officers put themselves in dangerous situations to keep this community safe. In this case, a traffic stop for expired plates led to a foot chase and the arrest of a convicted felon illegally in possession of a loaded firearm.”
Lane’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 24.
