INDIANAPOLIS — Quinn O’Bryan secured a walk-off win for Lake Central — on a walk, no less — in the Class 4A state championship game late Saturday night.
On a 3-2 pitch, the senior second baseman drew a base on balls with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Indians edged Mooresville 2-1 at Victory Field.
It was the longest game in the history of the state finals.
Brenden Smith, Mike Szatkowski and Nick Robinson all walked with two outs to set up the victory for Lake Central (25-9), which won its first state title since 2012 and second overall.
Blake Sivak picked up the win, pitching 3 2/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts. The Maryville recruit relieved senior Griffin Tobias, who was sensational against Mooresville (32-4). He exited after 118 pitches, allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in 8 1/3 innings. The Indiana recruit also had a double in the third for Lake Central’s first hit.
Lake Central’s Mike Swartzentruber becomes the first coach to lead two schools to a state championship after taking North Posey to back-to-back Class 2A titles in 2005 and 2006.
