The man who died in a weekend stabbing in Waukegan was killed as he attempted to rob two people, city police said.
Adam Hoth, 42, of Grayslake, threatened two people with a brick and smashed their car’s window before the fatal altercation, according to reports. The man who stabbed Hoth did so in self-defense, Lake County prosecutors said.
According to police, two people had been negotiating to buy a motorcycle over social media, and were instructed to come to an address on Harrison near Adelphi at around 9:55 p.m. Sunday.
When the people arrived at the address, however, the residents said they did not know anything about a motorcycle. When the two people were returning to their vehicle to leave the area, they were approached by Hoth and another man, who demanded money, police said.
After the two men refused to give Hoth and his accomplice money, Hoth smashed their car window and began looking for money inside the vehicle, saying he knew the pair had money to buy a motorcycle, according to police. A fight broke out, which resulted in Hoth being stabbed multiple times.
He was brought to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police interviewed witnesses, including the man who stabbed Hoth. Police said additional charges may be forthcoming related to the attempted robbery.
“After interviewing numerous witnesses and analyzing evidence it was determined that this was a robbery attempt that went terribly wrong,” Waukegan police said in a statement released Tuesday.
