West Virginia commit Izzy Ceaser is ready to ‘showcase’ her game. Grayslake North knows that’s nothing new.

Grayslake North soccer player Izzy Ceaser is used to flying under the radar.

Ceaser, a senior midfielder who committed to West Virginia nearly 14 months ago, has been quietly building an impressive resume.

“We’re not one of the top teams in the state, but I do think I should get recognized more, especially in the area,” she said.

Ceaser, a team captain, already has three goals and two assists for the Knights (2-0-1), who have started strong after winning just five games last year.

“Izzy’s not only an amazing leader, constantly helping and building the team up, but she’s also a phenomenal player,” senior defender Briana Pagac said.

Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said Ceaser, a fourth-year starter, is one of the best players in program history and is worthy of all-state consideration by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association. Grayslake North has had three all-state players and two Division I recruits, according to DeCaluwe.

“While Izzy has not yet earned that recognition from the IHSSCA, my hope is that with our improved team performance and record this season, it will happen,” DeCaluwe said. “With Izzy playing in a position that should showcase some of her ability and impact statistically speaking, she will earn that all-state recognition this season.”

Indeed, Ceaser is likely to score a career-high number of goals this season. She had 11 goals and 11 assists as a sophomore and was named All-Northern Lake County Conference after recording 13 goals and four assists as a junior.

“I’m playing more attacking mid this season rather than defensive mid,” she said. “I think I’m more physical this year. I’m not getting thrown off the ball as easily because I’m using my body, which is helping me win the ball more.

“I’m not being selfish, but if I know I can take a player on, when last year I would pass it, this year I’m actually taking them on and creating opportunities for the team to score and myself as well.”

DeCaluwe said Ceaser has a knack for finding open teammates and scoring goals but is an outstanding defender too.

“Izzy has the technical skill, tactical awareness and instincts to be an impact player at any moment,” DeCaluwe said. “Izzy has quick feet that allow her to be good on the ball with both feet and off the ball, where she is a great 1v1 defender.

“She typically plays as a defender, but Izzy is good enough to be effective in our attack, as she can play the final ball to create goal-scoring chances.”

Grayslake North senior forward Ashley Hernandez said Ceaser’s physical skills are only one reason for her success.

“Izzy knows how to read the field and the players really well,” Hernandez said. “She has very strong ball control and decision-making abilities while under pressure.”

Ceaser can help her teammates handle pressure too — and anything else that comes up this season.

“I have a big role on the team and want to help the younger players,” she said. “I’ve had a very good experience and want to be a role model.”
