Wintry mix expected Saturday as temperatures rise above freezing

National Weather Service officials are expecting a wintry mix to hit the area Saturday as temperatures rise above freezing.

Current conditions at both Chicago’s airports is 29 degrees, with a windchill at Midway Airport of negative two degrees.

Officials said a wintry mix of precipation was expected to develop Saturday afternoon changing to a period of freezing rain to rain as temperatures rise to about 38 degrees. The highest risk of freezing rain creating slippery sidewalks and road conditions is mainly northwest of Mendota to the Crystal Lake line, officials said.

National Weather Service officials said there is a chance of rain, snow and sleet between 3 to 4 p.m., then rain when conditions will become breezy with winds coming in from the southeast at about 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. There is an 80 percent chance of percipitation Saturday.

Saturday night, officials expect rain before midnight then rain with patchy drizzle after 3 a.m. with lows in the high 30s.
