Woman dies in fatal crash on U.S. 30 in Merrillville

A Griffith woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when her vehicle was involved in a crash on U.S. 30 near Mississippi Street in Merrillville.

Around 3:30 p.m., police were sent to a crash investigation near the intersection of U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street. When police arrived, they noticed one of the drivers was unresponsive. Paramedics and Merrillville Fire started to treat the driver, who was transported to a nearby Methodist Southlake Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:14 p.m. by emergency room doctors.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as 73-year-old Sylvia Schmidt, who resided in the 100 block of West Ash Street in Griffith, according to a release. She suffered multiple injuries and a toxicology report will be conducted.

Police closed part of eastbound U.S. 30 near Mississippi Street for hours due to the crash investigation.
