Woman killed, man shot, vehicle stolen in Gary Wednesday evening

A Gary woman was shot and killed and her vehicle stolen Wednesday evening.

Gary Police were called around 7:18 PM, to the 1100 block of N. Warren Street for a man down in a front yard, a release on the department’s social media page said Thursday. Officers found the man had sustained a gunshot wound.

They then found blood leading back into the house and after going inside discovered a woman who’d also been shot, the release said.

Gary Fire Department rushed the woman to St Catherine’s Hospital and the man, 69, to Methodist Northlake Hospital for treatment, according to the release. The woman died from her injuries; the Lake County Coroner’s office has identified her as Mary Sangerman, 73.

Officers discovered the suspect fled in Sangerman’s vehicle, a blue Nissan Xterra with Indiana license plate “Blue Mom,” according to the release. He was described as a black man wearing a trench-style coat and mask.

The Lake County Prosecutors Homicide Task Force, Lake County Crime Lab and Lake County Coroner’s Office are assisting.
