An Elgin woman has died in what police believe was a domestic-related murder-suicide at her home in the 600 block of Raymond Street, Elgin police said.
The incident was discovered about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday when police found the victim — identified as Gina M. Benfield, 47, by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office — with critical gunshot injuries and an unnamed man dead from what was described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Benfield initially was taken to an area hospital and later transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office case ledger said. An autopsy was to be done Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Kane County Coroner’s Office said they will release the male victim’s identity and cause of death after his family has been notified.
Elgin police said their preliminary investigation indicates it was “a domestic-related incident,” but no other details were released.
