A 55-year-old woman with dementia reported missing Tuesday after leaving the Lake County Fair was found dead a mile away Wednesday morning.
Vicki Kirkwood, of Merrillville, was last seen exiting the Lake County Fairgrounds at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday headed northbound, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Kirkwood was attending the fair with her mother Tuesday, according to the release.
The Lake County Coroner received a call at 10 a.m. Wednesday to the 900 block of Mary Ellen Drive in Crown Point, which is located about a mile northwest of the fairgrounds. Kirkwood’s body was found in the pond in the residential area, according to a news release.
An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.
