Wrigley Field to host 2 college hockey doubleheaders in January at ‘The Frozen Confines’

The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues won’t be the only hockey teams playing at Wrigley Field this winter.

The Big Ten and Cubs on Thursday announced plans for two college hockey doubleheaders — three men’s games and one women’s game — on Jan. 3-4 at Wrigley.

The conference is calling the event “The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series.”

The first day will feature two men’s games: Notre Dame versus Penn State and Michigan versus Ohio State. The Wisconsin and Ohio State women and the Wisconsin and Michigan State men will play on Jan. 4.

Game times are 4 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3 and 4:30 and 8 p.m. Jan. 4, though the order each day has not been determined. Big Ten Network will broadcast all four games live.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 30 at Cubs.com/BigTenHockey.

Wrigley also is hosting the NHL Winter Classic for the second time on Dec. 31 with the Hawks facing the Blues.

Wisconsin (2019, ’21, ’23) and Ohio State (2022, ’24) have combined to win the last five women’s hockey national championships. They met in the last two championship games, with each team winning once.

The Michigan men made the last three Frozen Fours, extending the program’s NCAA record to 28 appearances.
