Former Blackhawks player Alex DeBrincat buys, and immediately resells, West Loop condo

Former Chicago Blackhawks right winger Alex DeBrincat, who now skates for the Detroit Red Wings, paid $3.465 million in late January for a condominium on the 14th floor of a newly built West Loop building and then turned around and sold it less than two months later for $3.622 million.

DeBrincat, 26, grew up in Michigan and later moved to the Chicago area and attended Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest. He was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2016, and he was an All-Star and a workhorse for the Blackhawks before they traded him in 2022 to the Ottawa Senators.

DeBrincat was one of the first buyers to put down money for a unit in the West Loop’s 15-story Embry building while it was still under construction, his listing agent, Mike Larson of Gold Coast Realty, told Elite Street. DeBrincat went ahead and closed on the four-bedroom, 3,947-square-foot unit in late January and then turned around and put it back up for sale for $3.85 million, just two months later. He found a buyer less than a month after that.

“His intentions had been to move in,” Larson said. “He chose that unit for that tier, which is high up and with that exposure.”

The condo has a private elevator entrance, 4-1/2 bathrooms, a den, a living room with wide-plank hardwood floors and a bespoke honed Indiana limestone gas fireplace. Other features include a butler’s pantry with custom cabinets and a beverage center, a kitchen with Bovelli cabinetry and Miele, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, and a primary bedroom suite with automated room-darkening shades and heated floors in the primary bathroom.

The unit’s own outdoor feature is a terrace with city views that measures 23 feet by 13 feet.

The condo is on the 14th floor of the Embry. The Embry’s 15th floor contains half-floor penthouses.

“The Embry was like the missing piece in a puzzle of boutique high-end buildings the city’s been yearning for,” Larson said. “Its prime location, near the city’s top dining spots, major corporation headquarters and parks, only adds to its allure. Views and outdoor space were also very important so (DeBrincat) securing (this) southeast corner unit was top of mind. (And) finding a luxury property in the West Loop with dedicated door staff can be quite the challenge. The Embry stands out by providing round-the-clock security.”

The unit’s sale also included two parking spaces.

DeBrincat previously owned a five-bedroom, 3,700-square-foot house on North Hoyne Avenue in Roscoe Village. He paid $1.035 million in 2019 for the gut-rehabbed home, and he sold it in 2022 for $1.285 million.

DeBrincat now owns a six-bedroom, 7,215-square-foot mansion in Birmingham, Mich., outside Detroit. He purchased it in September for $3.375 million.
