Memorial Day weekend events

Chesterton

The Indiana Dunes National Park will host a screening of “Vietnam Nurses,” which highlights the important role nurses played during the Vietnam War, at 1 p.m. Monday at the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center, located at 1215 Indiana 49 in Porter.

Crown Point

The American Legion Post 20 and the City of Crown Point will host its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday.
The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., starting at the Cal Ripken Little League parking lot along Joliet Street. The parade begins on Joliet Street, goes to Main Street, then south to Wells Street and ends at the Historic Maplewood Cemetery, located at 555 S. Indiana Ave.
At 11 a.m., American Legion Post 20, Crown Point Mayor Pete Land, Crown Point officials, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the United States Naval Sea Cadets Polar Star Battalion and local elected officials will gather for a brief ceremony at the cemetery.

Hammond

There will be a Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday at Hessville Park Veterans Memorial, located at 173rd Street and Kennedy Avenue.

Hebron

Lake County Parks will host a Memorial Day Service at 2:30 p.m. at Stoney Run County Park, located at 9230 E. 142nd Ave. The event will feature speakers, patriotic music, and refreshments.

Highland

The Town of Highland will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Main Square Park, located 3001 Ridge Road. The park will feature with Hometown Hero banners during a ceremony to honor veterans and fallen heroes.

Merrillville

The American Legion 1st District will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday in the veterans section of Calumet Park Cemetery, located at 2305 W. 73rd Avenue.

Munster

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial Park, located at 9710 Calumet Ave. The event, which will be hosted by Munster VFW Post 2697 and American Legion Post 16, will feature a traditional 21-gun salute with a ceremonial cannon beginning at noon, weather permitting.

Portage

The city will hold its Memorial Day Program at noon Monday in Founders Square Park, located at 6300 W. Main St. The event will feature speakers, including Portage Mayor Austin Bonta and U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, D-Highland, and songs by the Portage High School choir. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Woodland Park-Oakwood Hall, located at 2100 Willowcreek Road.

Schererville

A Memorial Day service will be held at noon Monday at the Seven Flags Veterans Garden at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, located at 77th and Cline Avenues. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, located at 8178 Cline Avenue.

Valparaiso

Valpo Parks, Valpo Parks Foundation, and the City of Valparaiso will hold a Memorial Day service at 3 p.m. Friday at the Service Memorial at Foundation Meadows Park, located at 3210 N. Campbell St. Vietnam Veteran Dr. Robert Shankland will share his perspective on the significance of Memorial Day and the importance of honoring fallen veterans.
