Sunrise Rotary holding drive-by diaper donation event Friday

The Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise is hosting a diaper drive to benefit the West Suburban Community Pantry from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, in front of Naperville County Club, 25W570 Chicago Ave.

Rotary members are seeking donations of diapers, especially sizes 4, 5 and 6, pull-up training pants, baby wipes, and diaper creams and ointments. Also being collected are donated canned fruit and tuna.

Donors can hand off their items to Rotary volunteers who will be at the country club or drop them off at the pantry, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at 6809 Hobson Valley Drive in Woodridge.

The pantry serves more than 1,000 families weekly from DuPage and Will counties, including Naperville, Lisle, Woodridge, Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

Srini Namasivayam, president of Naperville Sunrise Rotary, said in a news release that diapers and baby wipes cannot be bought using SNAP benefits and healthy canned foods help families when school is out.

Naper Settlement announces details on new Tuesday Farmers Market

Naper Settlement’s new farmers market will be feature mission-based, fair-trade or local vendors when it opens June 25, according to settlement officials.

The market, which will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept. 17, will offer such items as fresh produce, honey, hot sauce, bakery goods, coffee, candles, jams and jellies. A variety of handcrafted items, house plants and dried floral arrangements also will be available.

Acoustic musical performances from local bluegrass and country singers will be presented weekly on the Paw Paw Post Office porch. Food trucks from Billy Bricks Pizza and Hello Boba will be on site.

Free talks and demonstrations are to be offered from 5 to 6 p.m. weekly at the Mary and Richard Benck Family Agriculture Center. Among the topics planned are designing a sustainable garden, attracting pollinators, an introduction to backyard chickens, beekeeping and the history of fermentation.

Chicago Cubs to host mobile blood drive as part of Pint for Kim

As a kick-off to the annual A Pint for Kim blood drive, the Chicago Cubs and Marquee Sports Network will hold a private mobile event Thursday, May 9, during which employees and former Cubs players, including outfielder Ryan Sweeney, will donate blood.

The Cubs event, which is not open to the public, is in honor of former Naperville resident Kimberley Sandford, a Cubs fan, who lost her life due to a rare appendix cancer in March 2020.

A Pint for Kim blood drive, which is open to the public, runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Naperville North High School, 899 N. Mill St.

At the annual event, which is the largest one-day blood drive in the state, blood donors can enjoy live music, a free car show, food trucks, games and a raffle featuring more than $35,000 worth of prizes.

Walk-ins are welcome up to 2:50 p.m. Saturday or appointments to donate can be made in advance. For more information, go to www.apintforkim.com.

Ribbon-cutting planned for new Heritage Place Park in historic district

A grand opening celebration for the new Heritage Place Park  in Naperville’s Historic District will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at 130 N. Wright St., just east of downtown Naperville.

The Naperville Park District event will feature a ribbon-cutting to formally recognize its 138th park venue. Amenities include a playground, swing set, picnic shelter, plaza and open space. Refreshments will be served.

In the event of inclement weather, the ribbon-cutting will be moved to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, park district officials said.
